In short: Gate runs on your Mac and sends nothing about you anywhere on its own. There is no account, no telemetry and no analytics, in the app or on this site. Your rules, Activity and journal stay on your Mac.
This policy explains how Ambysto Technologies LLC ("Ambysto", "we", "us") handles personal information for the Ambysto Gate app ("Gate") and this website, gate.ambysto.com. It applies together with the Ambysto Privacy Policy, which covers all our products. Where this page is more specific about Gate, this page applies.
1. What stays on your Mac
To do its job, Gate records which app connected to which destination, when, the decision and the reason for it, and the bytes sent and received. It also stores your rules, lists, settings and the journal of rule changes.
- All of it is stored on your Mac only. We never receive it.
- Activity history is kept for 24 hours in Free and up to 30 days in Pro, then deleted. Gate's own event log is kept for 90 days.
- Gate never reads the content of your traffic or your DNS replies. It decides on the app and the destination only.
- Uninstalling Gate removes the app, the filter, the rules, lists, settings, history and journal.
- Export writes a file only when you ask, to a place you choose.
2. Connections Gate makes
Gate itself connects to the internet only in these cases, and each one appears in Activity labelled "Gate":
- Update check: Gate reads the Ambysto release feed. No user data is sent. Gate never installs an update without you.
- Lists (Pro): if you add a block or allow list from a URL, Gate downloads it from that address on the schedule you set.
- Destination names: to label an address, Gate asks your Mac's own resolver, the same way any app looks up a name.
- Outside look-ups: off by default. Only after you turn them on, and only when you press a button, Gate asks a named public service for your Mac's public address or checks one address or name against named public lists. The address or name checked goes to those services and through your DNS servers. Gate sends nothing else: no app names, no Activity, no identifiers. Results are kept in memory until Gate quits and are never written to disk. Each service handles requests under its own privacy policy, linked in Gate's Settings.
3. Your license key
A Pro license key is checked on your Mac, offline. Checking it sends nothing to us.
4. When you buy Pro
Payments are processed by our payment provider. We receive the details needed to issue and support your license, such as your name, email address and billing country, and limited card details such as the card brand, last four digits and expiry date. We do not store full card numbers. We use these details to deliver your key, send your receipt, handle refunds and answer support requests.
5. This website
gate.ambysto.com sets no cookies and runs no analytics or advertising scripts. It is hosted on Vercel, which keeps standard server logs, such as your IP address, browser type and the page requested, to deliver and secure the site.
6. When you email us
If you write to us, we keep your message and email address to answer you and to keep a record of support requests.
7. How we share information
We do not sell personal information. We share it only with service providers that help us run Gate's sales and support, such as payment processing, email delivery and hosting, under contracts that limit their use of the data; with authorities, where required by law or to protect rights and safety; and with a buyer or successor, if our business is involved in a merger or acquisition, subject to this policy.
8. Data retention
We keep purchase and support records as long as needed to support your license, and longer only where we must keep records for legal, tax or accounting reasons.
9. Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, export or delete your personal information, and to object to or restrict certain processing. To make a request, email contact@ambysto.com. We respond within 30 days. Data that Gate keeps on your Mac is under your control: you can delete it in the app or by uninstalling Gate.
10. International transfers
Ambysto is based in the United States and our providers may process data in other countries. Where required, we use appropriate safeguards such as standard contractual clauses.
11. Children
Gate is not intended for anyone under 16, and we do not knowingly collect their personal information.
12. Changes
We may update this policy and will post the new version on this page. For material changes, we will notify customers by email.
